The activities fulfilled by proteoglycans in the connective tissue include the following: they increase cell proliferation and metabolism, have an anti-inflammatory action, accelerate healing processes, increase cell connection with extracellular components of the environment, increase intercell communication, have a structural function in the connective tissue, regulate water content in the connective tissue and its water retention capacity.
